Theory of Change
Cutting methane emissions at the rate required to slow global warming will require a massive effort from both the private and public sectors. The role of the private sector is to lay the groundwork for swift adoption of methane mitigation based on its business case, while regulations and policies that will close market gaps and drive down costs are developed and implemented. In this way the emerging methane mitigation industry will provide the near end of the bridge to a compliance-driven methane mitigation market.
The methane mitigation industry has been trapped by fragmentation that undermines its market development and climate impact.
Proven solutions are available across energy, agriculture and waste sectors, but they remain isolated in silos - companies rarely share learnings across sectors. Investors and corporate buyers struggle to evaluate solutions without common frameworks for comparison, and compelling business cases are largely unknown.
The industry needs a unified voice to articulate its business value and climate impact in terms that the private sector can appreciate.
The Role of the MMIC
The MMIC is the first and only member-based industry organization to bring together the entire methane mitigation value chain - from solutions providers to end users - across methane sources, mitigation approaches, industrial sectors and geographies.
Functioning as a neutral nonprofit, the MMIC was founded in 2025 in consultation with a dozen founding member companies.
The MMIC provides coordination for the methane mitigation industry ecosystem:

What We Mean by Methane Mitigation
The MMIC defines methane mitigation as strategies that directly lessen the impact of methane on global temperatures.
Methane mitigation includes a range of strategies, technologies and operational practices. Some solutions have cross-sector applications and others are specific to the operational conditions of a particular industrial sector.
Examples of methane mitigation solutions include strategies to prevent the formation of methane emissions entirely (rescuing food or diverting food scraps from landfills), practices and technologies that abate methane emissions (leak detection and repair in oil and gas), and techniques to remediate methane that has already escaped into the air (accelerated breakdown of methane via oxidation).
The MMIC makes a distinction between methane mitigation (directly lessening impact) and the activities that enable and accelerate methane mitigation - methane measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification (MMRV) - acknowledging that methane mitigation and MMRV are inextricable.
Leadership

Monica Miller Prabhu is the founder and executive director of the Methane Mitigation Industries Council (MMIC). Prior to starting the MMIC she spent two decades in the private sector.
Most recently she led operations, communications and fundraising at a methane mitigation technology startup working on solutions for hard-to-abate methane emissions with cross-sector applications. Through that work she developed an understanding of the dynamics at play across the methane mitigation industry and relationships with industry leaders and stakeholders.
Before methane mitigation Monica was a senior communications strategist for innovative technology brands.
Born and raised in Alaska, she was educated in Atlanta, has lived in Bolivia and New York City, and currently resides with her family in the SF Bay Area.

Advisory Board
The MMIC seeks input and feedback on industry issues and strategic direction from member companies through an Advisory Board.
Ethics Committee
The MMIC maintains an independent Ethics Committee with a Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct with associated policies. All members are required to adhere to these codes.
Stakeholder Relationships
The MMIC leadership maintains relationships with organizations in the public sector, NGOs, and the scientific research community to develop mutual understanding and coordinate activities aligned with making faster, deeper cuts to methane emissions worldwide.
While MMIC membership is reserved for commercial businesses, the MMIC actively collaborates with academic, nonprofit, and government partners to advance the industry's mission.
